As UPA-II completes its first year in office, the Left is preparing to come out with a sort of a report card to highlight the government’s failures. The CPI gave some indication that the Left would focus on corruption and lack of collective responsibility. “In its second avatar, the UPA government has proved to be a pack of irresponsible egoists and… worst type of corrupt politicians… Corruption is the hallmark of the UPA-II. It seems the rulers are convinced that this is their last chance to loot the public money,” the lead editorial in the CPI mouthpiece New Age says.

And the attack is not limited to the Congress. Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee is an obvious target, and so are the DMK ministers. The CPI says she behaves in the most irresponsible manner and calls DMK ministers A. Raja and M.K. Alagiri as the classical examples of corruption and irresponsibility.

The lack of collective responsibility has been another feature of the UPA-II,the CPI says, and recollects the controversial remarks made by several ministers in the last one year to make its point. The usual allegations,of the government swallowing the economic prescriptions of the World Bank and the IMF and surrendering economic and political sovereignty to the US,also feature in the attack.

Hindu terror

The arrest of three persons who have links with Hindutva groups in connection with the Ajmer blasts has prompted the CPM to renew its attack on the government for being soft on Hindutva terror.

With the activities of Abhinav Bharat and Sanathan Sanstha coming out in the open,it points out that it is no longer possible to deny that Hindutva terrorism is a reality. “Both Abhinav Bharat and the Sanathan Sanstha expound a militaristic Hindutva spewing hatred against the Muslims.”

The intelligence and security establishments have been reluctant to recognise this reality. They are fixated on terrorism emanating from Muslim extremism and its external links. Otherwise, the investigation into the horrific Samjhauta Express blast would not have reached a dead end,it says.

With elections in West Bengal and Kerala just a year away, the CPM is expected to up the ante against Hindutva terror as this might please its Muslim votebank. The CPM says both the RSS and the BJP do not want to acknowledge the truth while the UPA government has shown lack of clarity and firmness in dealing with Hindutva terror.

Mission Bihar

In an indication of the Left’s potential electoral strategy for the forthcoming Bihar assembly elections, the New Age carries an article on the opposition to implementation of the suggestions made by the Bandopadhyaya commission on land reforms. Referring to a demonstration held in Patna earlier this month opposing the recommendations of the commission,it says the “organisers of the agitation were well known names from the ruling parties and non-Left parties of the opposition. They all got together on the same platform.”

Although the CPI had earlier talked about forging an alliance with RJD and the LJP,the CPM is not too keen. Besides, the sentiment among the local CPI leaders is said to be in favour of Left parties fighting the polls alone. The article interestingly points out that the CPM,CPI,CPI(ML),RSP and the Forward Bloc have been continously agitating for the implementation of the commission’s recommendations. The article reflects the mood of the workers: how can the Left parties, known votaries of land reforms, join hands with forces that are opposing the reforms?
