Wise decision
* Apropos of the editorial Better judgment (IE,December 30),it was wise of the Union cabinet to clear the proposal to grant the judicial appointments commission constitutional status. There is no doubt that the two-decade-old collegium system needs to urgently be done away with. Even if the bill does not get passed by Parliament before the 15th Lok Sabha is dissolved, the fact that it was introduced in the Rajya Sabha means that it will not lapse and can be taken up for consideration after the general elections without having to restart the whole legislative process.

* This refers to Sibal: Too late for Modi to say he was shaken (IE,December 30). Kapil Sibal has termed the BJPs prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modis expression of pain and agony over the 2002 Gujarat riots as a political stunt. It is undeniable that Modis expression of sorrow is over a decade too late. But can the Congress afford to be so smug? How long did it take Congressmen to express regret for the 1984 anti-Sikh riots in Delhi? Political leaders are toying with the peoples sentiments. Religion and identity will not be effective election planks in 2014. Voters want development. They have wised up to these old tricks and gimmicks.

RIP Farooq
* Indian cinema has lost a noble actor. The untimely death of veteran thespian Farooq Sheikh a champion of parallel cinema and a brilliant actor who could portray any role with perfection is tragic. Acting was in his blood. He was a regular on the stage and in front of the camera. His devoted followers will remember both his plays and films for ages to come. Sheikh was also a social activist and participated in innumerable programmes for the benefit of common people. The recipient of a national award,Sheikh was a versatile actor whose death has created a vacuum which will be difficult to fill.

Checking China
* This refers to An avoidable crisis (IE,December 30). Shinzo Abes visit to a war shrine in Japan must be seen as a part of the larger game of establishing regional dominance and strategic
one-upmanship,playing out between China and Japan. The visit could be a response to the demarcation of an air defence identification zone by China, which covers the disputed Senkaku/ Diaoyu islands. Though Abes assertiveness may strain Japans already tense relationship with China,it is necessary to keep the latter under check.
