JPC and Beyond
The Hyderabad-based daily,Munsif, writes an editorial on the PM announcing a JPC probe into the 2G spectrum scam: Now that the PM has agreed to the constitution of the JPC,the question can justifiably be asked why this was not done in the beginning of the winter session of Parliament. If such an action was taken then,we could have avoided the loss to the countrys exchequer.
PMs Tele-Conference
The prime ministers interaction with editors of TV channels has received sharp comments from almost all national and regional newspapers. Commenting on Manmohan Singhs statement that he included A. Raja in his cabinet as telecom minister due to the compulsions of coalition government,Lucknow-based daily,Aag,writes: According to the Indian Constitution,it is the PMs right and privilege to include anyone he chooses in his cabinet. And only he will be held responsible for the actions and conduct of the members of his cabinet.
The Mumbai-based daily,Urdu Times, says: The press show of the PM was disappointing. Removal of corruption, price rise and poverty is not within the capacity of a constrained and helpless ruler. The fault is with the system, not of an individual. Even if an honest person makes an entry,he becomes constrained and helpless like Manmohan Singh. V.P. Singh,I.K. Gujral and,to some extent,A.B. Vajpayee too were like him and efforts were often made to project each of them as the right man in the wrong party.
Faiz for All Times
The birth centenary celebrations of the Urdu poet Faiz Ahmed Faiz have been the subject of much discussion. Critics explain that his being one of the founders of the Progressive Writers Association did not limit the appeal of his poetry to a particular section of readers. The beauty of his romantic metaphor was as intense as his message for the downtrodden. In an editorial on February 21,Lucknow-based daily Qaumi Khabrein approvingly quotes the poets words: In totality, the value of a couplet includes both romantic nicety and social consciousness. Therefore,a good couplet is one that meets the standard not only of art but of life as well. It says he crafted his style by an amalgamation of romance and revolution.
