Opinion Israels attack
Shock, horror, and a sense of despair followed the Israeli attacks on Gaza.
Shock, horror, and a sense of despair followed the Israeli attacks on Gaza. Delhi-based Hindustan Express,in an editorial entitled,Israeli barbarism and the worlds helplessness (Jan 5),writes: Very small innocent children are getting killed in the laps of their mothers… Humanity is ashamed, and is crying. But if there is anyone not agonised by this mercilessness, cruelty and barbarism,it is the world powers… The role of Arab countries too is extremely disappointing. The tacit support for Israeli action by the US and the UK,the ineffectiveness of the UN and inaction of Muslim countries have been severely criticised.
Hyderabad-based Rahnuma-e-Deccan (Jan 1) writes: In the Gaza strip now humanity is pitted against satanism (shaitaniat) and the entire civilised world is watching this encounter closely, particularly the newly elected US President,Barack Hussein Obama, who is tight-lipped and tongue-tied. The paper talks of Obamas severe condemnation of the terrorist attack on Mumbai in contrast with his silence on Gaza killings. This gives an indication of how the Jewish lobby dominates the thinking of the worlds most powerful head of state, the paper believes.
Some papers have described the Israeli action in Gaza as a case of state terrorism and worse. Mumbais leading Urdu daily,Inquilab,in its editorial entitled,Israel will not succeed (Dec. 31) is not pessimistic about the fate of Hamas: If members of this organisation (Hamas) were to be intimidated by attacks by cannons and tanks it would not have tried to match forces (panja laranein ki koshish) with a very strong military power like Israel.
Elections in J & K
The wide participation in the Jammu and Kashmir assembly elections has been heartily welcomed by Urdu papers.
Rashtriya Sahara,in its editorial entitled,Dialogue, the only solution to the problem (Jan 6) writes: Appointment of Omar Abdullah as the Chief Minister is perhaps the most welcome change that has taken place in the state after a very long time. Omar Abdullah, not only represents the young generation of the state,he is also extremely popular among the people of J&K for his broad-mindedness and modern outlook and thinking. He demonstrated these qualities by expressing his willingness for talks with separatists for the betterment of the lot of the States people on Sunday. He said that the Central government should re-start talks with the separatists that had been discontinued in 2008. He made it clear that the state government would also play its role fully as a facilitator.
Delhi-based Sahafat (Dec 30) pleads for serious action on the part of the Centre,to make use of the new environment and resolve the problems of the Kashmiri people and reassuring them about the equality of their rights … The separatists should also feel that this state is theirs and they should take part in the democratic process and form the government by winning the confidence of the people,it opines.
A new era in Bangladesh?
In a front page commentary,Jamaat-e-Islamis biweekly Daawat, writes: (Bangladesh election) results have surprised everybody because the voters have given a very clear verdict. In their view not only the country needed the voters clear verdict; there was also the need for exerting full weight in favour of one party.
Taking note of incidents of violence, allegations of rigging and protests during previous elections in the country,Delhi-based Jadeed Khabar,in its editorial writes: It is hoped that feeling the sentiments of the people, they would not start once again a wave of violence, protests and demonstrations.
