THE Planning Minister, S B Chavan, has warned chief ministers that if they do not mobilise resources in accordance with agreed estimates and go on for overdrafts, their plan outlay will get curtailed. The ministers were expected to give an assurance that they would abide by this. However, Chavan’s letter has been ignored by all.
US Secretary of State George Shultz, who arrived yesterday, said his talks would result in strengthening and expanding relations between the two countries. Shultz said they would cover a range of global, regional and bilateral issues. Both countries share a common goal of freeing the world from poverty and armed aggression. “These objectives have been fundamental to our policies in this region where India plays a central role,” he said.
Curfew clamped on Jullundur and Malerkotla in the wake of communal clashes is to remain in force as tension at these places has yet not completely subsided. Malerkotla in Sangrur district had been put under curfew on June 18 after communal riots took one life in the town while Jullundur city came under it on June 27 in the wake of group clashes, bomb blasts and police firings.
Union Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee said that fertiliser prices have been reduced by 7.5 per cent with immediate effect. Addressing a national seminar on kharif production, he said that these have been slashed keeping in view the fall in international oil prices.
