Opinion August 4, 1983, Forty Years Ago: TULF Boycott

Leaders of the Tamil United Liberation Front (TULF) have reiterated the party’s decision to boycott the Sri Lanka Parliament which is to meet on August 4 to pass legislation depriving advocates of a separate state for Tamils of their civic rights. TULF MPs also rejected an offer from President J R Jayawardene to provide air transport to opposition members to attend the Parliament session.
TN Requests Centre
The all-party meeting convened by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M G Ramachandran urged the Centre to take “appropriate steps” immediately to prevent the Sri Lanka government from going ahead with its legislation to deprive Tamils of their basic citizenship. By another resolution, it appealed to PM Indira Gandhi to act on her assurance on giving full protection to Tamils in Sri Lanka.
No Strike In AP
The government employees in Andhra Pradesh called off their 18-day-old strike with immediate effect after their representatives secured a settlement with the state government on a majority of demands. The agreement, signed at the end of a seven-hour meeting by the deputy secretary (general administration) M V S Prasad and others, was described by an official spokesman as a “slight deviation” from the proposals put forward by the government before the strike.

The Chief Justice of the Jammu and Kashmir high court Bahu-ud-Din Farooqi, may tender his resignation if the central government persists in his transfer and inducting in the state an outsider in his place.
