MUMBAI, DECEMBER 6

After the Bombay High Court’s 15-day ultimatum to the Maharashtra Government on November 21 to come up with an action plan in the alleged custodial death of Ghatkopar bomb blast accused Khwaja Yunus, the state on Thursday submitted a letter granting sanction for the prosecution of police officers allegedly involved in the case.

Additional Public Prosecutor Vitthal Konde Deshmukh submitted a letter by P T Goud, joint secretary, Home Department, which reads: “The state Government, after considering the proposal of the State CID, evidence on the record and the recommendation of the Director General of Police, has issued sanction order on December 5, as required under Section 197 of the CrPC (prosecution of public servants)”. “The state CID has been asked to take further necessary action in the matter,” the letter says.

Last year, the CID had forwarded the proposal seeking sanction for the prosecution of 14 cops in connection with alleged custodial death of Yunus.
