
GURGAON, February 8: Two unidentified armed assailants opened fire on the car of the managing director of a private nursing home, Dr Sushil Oberoi this morning. The doctor and his wife who were in the car escaped unhurt.
Dr Oberoi said he had been receiving extortion calls from persons claiming to be the associates of underworld don, Dawood Ibrahim.
According to eyewitnesses, Dr Oberoi and his wife were driving to their Pushpanjali hospital around 9.50 a.m., when two youngsters on a scooter DL-4S-3556 started following them. As they neared the hospital gate, the scooter overtook the car, the youths fired a shot and fled. The bullet pierced the window on the driver8217;s side.
As the assailants sped away, they lost their balance and fell off the scooter. But before anyone could nab them they disappeared into a nearby alley. The incident which occurred in a VIP locality of the city has set alarm bells ringing in the law enforcement establishment.
Sources said that within an hour of the incident, Dr Oberoi received another threatening call allegedly from contract holders of the D-company. The callers reportedly demanded 8220;their money8221; 8212; Rs 5 lakh. In the past 20 days, leading private practitioners, jewellers, cloth-merchants, auto-dealers and other businessmen in Gurgaon have been receiving extortion calls. The telephone numbers of these persons were placed under observation and it turned out that the calls were being made from mobile phones.
