X-ray baggage scanners soon at Delhi metro stations

Beefing up security measures at Metro stations in the wake of the serial blasts in the national capital, the DMRC is set to install X-ray Baggage Inspection Systems at prominent stations.

8220;Six new baggage inspection machines have already rolled in and they will be installed at stations on a priority basis to check baggages being carried by passengers,8221; Delhi Metro Rail Corporation DMRC spokesman Anuj Dayal said.

The measure has been taken in view of the recent serial blasts in Delhi, he added.

The Metro stations where the machines would be installed first include New Delhi, Old Delhi, Rajeev Chowk Connaught Place and Karol Bagh.

The final list of few other stations will be drawn out soon, Dayal said.

The machines akin to those which are installed at airports will be able to scan all heavy and light baggages carried by commuters.

The brand new foreign-made machines will be made operational soon, he said.

The spokesman also said other Metro stations will also be equipped with similar machines in a phased manner.

After the spate of bomb blasts in the national capital on September 13, two of which took place near the Metro stations of Rajiv Chowk and Barakhamba road, the Delhi Metro will also see an increased presence of sniffer dog squads and metal detectors.

8220;We will also increase our personnel as per requirement,8221; CISF spokesperson Rohit Katiyar said.
