South Zone’s inept batting display combined with West’s good spin bowling were the salient features of the first day of the Duleep Trophy match here today. South were dismissed for 219. At close of play, West lost two quick wickets for two runs. Balaji accounted for Satyajit Parab (1) and night watchman Rakesh Patel (1).
For the West Zone Romesh Pawar (4-78) was the pick of the bowlers. West put South in to bat and right from the start of their innings South were kept quiet by the pace bowlers.
After a brief 43-run partnership with Sriram, Robin Uthappa ran himself out for 30, after getting 10 runs in an over off Powar.
South then kept losing wickets at regular intervals, except for an 81-run partnership between left-handers Badani (40) and Sriram (43), which helped them cross the 200-run mark.
South Zone coach Suresh Padnekar said, ‘‘It is bad batting and few of our batsmen threw away their wickets. The track is a slow turner but not dangerous enough to have a team dismissed for such a low score.’’
