CHANDIGARH, JULY 11: Functions all over the city marked the World Population Day observed today. The Family Welfare Department UT today organised a function at Polyclinic Sector 22 to mark the day.

Prof Kak, Director Principal GMCH Sector 32 was the chief guest and K.P.Sinha, joint secretary finance and Health presided over the function. Speaking on the occasion, SSP Chandigarh Police, C.S.R. Reddy, stressed upon the migration of labour between different states, in search of livelihood, which deals with quantum of population and the quality of life in the places where they have migrated to. quot;With increasing population, increasing migration, keeping tabs on the activities of this population becomes increasingly difficult,quot;he said. Prof Kak emphasised on the increasingly growing numbers and the need to check the growth rate. quot; There is an urgency to control our increasing numbers. The matter needs to be taken up, addressed to and there is a need for all individuals to play their own role at least,quot; he said. Dr M.P.Manocha, Director Family Welfare, said,quot; With population increasing, we have to feed all the mouths to make the hands work effectively. The growing numbers are eating into our resources, bothphysical and material. Whatever we produce we consume, there is no scope for reserves and even those we have are used up.quot;

300 participate in race
More than three hundred sportspersons took part in the World population Day race event which was held here from Sector 16 Cricket Stadium. The event was jointly organised by Chandigarh Sports Department in coordination with the Sports Authority of India. The race which began from Sector 16, terminated at Sector 42 Sports Complex after passing through the streets of Sector 23 and Sector 24.

FPAI holds function
PANCHKULA: Local branch of the Family Planning Association of India FPAI today observed World Population Day at the Senior Citizens Day Care Centre in Sector 15 here. Speaking on the occasion, W.D.Walia, Honorary Treasurer of the Panchkula branch of the FPAI, said declining fertility levels and increasing levels of life expectancy are producing fundamental changes not only in structure of the society, but also in the family and intergenerational relationships. The senior citizens who expressed their views on the subject were Dr R.K.Sharma, S.N.Chabra, R.P.Malhotra and ED Prakash Maingi.

Students of the local Government College also expressed their views on the generation gap and the hopes and aspirations of the youth from the senior citizens. The issues which were identified include discipline among youth, lack of respect and care for the elderly, pressure on youth to outperform others and lack of educational and employment facilities.

During the occasion one-minute silence was also observe as a mark of respect for the Kargil Martyrs.
