When the Siddharthnagar police handed over a CD to the Sashastra Seema Bal SSB last week in which a constable was shown taking a bribe from people trying to smuggle fertilizers and grains to Nepal, everyone was curious to know who shot it and how.
It was done silently as part a 8220;round- the-clock sting operation8221; in this eastern UP district to identify corrupt policemen. It was done by SP Ramit Sharma, a 1999 IPS officer, helped by a trusted team, a pen camera, spycams, audiotapes and breathalyzers.
8220;The idea was to trap policemen who are either corrupt or are drunk. It was the only way to instill confidence in the department and mount psychological pressure on policemen to stay clean,8221; Sharma said. He demonstrates to the policemen how the gadgets function, indirectly telling them they are all under watch. 8220;These cameras can take clear shots from 200 m,8221; he tells his men, adding, 8220;while this exercise traps the corrupt, it also shows many are clean.8221;
One sting by the SP led to a case against a constable and deduction in salaries of others. He claims over 1,000 chowkidars have agreed to record happenings in their areas and call him on his cell if they notice anything wrong.
