The dropping mercury in the last 24 hours have finally led to the onset of winter in Kolkata. The maximum temperature which was 26 degree Celsius on December 16 dropped further to 25.8 on Wednesday, one degree below normal. The minimum temperature, too, hovered around 16 degrees Celsius.
Officials at the Meteorological department in Alipore has predicted that the winter chill developed in the last two days is expected to remain with the possibility of the minimum temperature dipping further.
The website of the meteorological department, however, states that temperature rose at a few places in Gangetic Bengal. The temperature forecast till December 19 is of 25 degree Celsius maximum and 15 degree Celsius minimum, with clear sky during the day in Gangetic Bengal. It is expected to get a little cloudy in the sub-Himalayan Bengal. Mornings are, however, expected to remain foggy and misty.
The low pressure trough formed over south-east Bay of Bengal and south Andaman Sea still persists. It is, however, unlikely to have any influence on Bengal and the weather is expected to remain dry over Kolkata and the rest of eastern India. Mist and fog do remain a concern for the city and visibility may be reduced to 1500 to 200 metres.
