PESHAWAR, November 19: West Indies were left counting on Brian Lara to avoid defeat in the first Test against Pakistan after another struggle on the third day today.
The tourists ended on 99 for two, needing another 131 to make Pakistan bat again and with eight second wickets intact. Earlier Inzamam-ul Haq scored an unbeaten 92 as Pakistan scored 381, to take a first innings lead of 230.
Lara was 36 not out and Sherwin Campbell was on 34 when bad light stopped play eight overs early.
West Indies lost Stuart Williams for two and Shivnarine Chanderpaul for 14, but Lara and Campbell avoided further loss with some resolute batting.
Lara hit eight sweetly timed fours and promised more after his failure in the first innings.
8220;Yes, Brian Lara and Carl Hooper will be the key players but I am hopeful that we will get them out and win the match,8221; said Pakistan captain Wasim Akram, who is under pressure to produce a win.
But Pakistan are in the driving seat. West Indies made 151 in the first innings and will have to bat with determination to save the match.
8220;We certainly look to Lara and others to put up a good total and avoid defeat,8221; West Indian skipper Courtney Walsh said.
Despite a sore toe which meant he batted with a runner, Inzamam hit some great shots and deserved a century. He helped Pakistan add 131 for the last four wickets. Inzamam hit nine fours and two towering sixes during his 273-minutes innings.
This is the fourth time Inzamam has finished in the nervous nineties. He scored 95 at the same venue against Sri Lanka two years ago to add to his 95 Johannesburg 1994-95 and 96 against South Africa last month.
Inzamam added 43 with Shahid Nazir 18 for the ninth wicket and 34 with Mushtaq Ahmed for the last wicket. Courtney Walsh folded the Pakistan innings bowling Mushtaq with a yorker.
Walsh finished with 5-78, his 14th five wicket Test haul, taking his tally to 344 wickets in 94 Tests. Ian Bishop took 3-76 and Carl Hooper 2-40.
Curtly Ambrose did not get a wicket and conceded 76 runs, a rare failure in a glittering 73-Tests career.
Resuming at 246-5, Pakistan lost Azhar Mahmood in the second over. Azhar edged a Walsh ball to Carl Hooper after making 16.
Moin khan hit a superb six off a Walsh bouncer to reach his seventh fifty in Tests. He needed 116 balls and stayed at the wicket for 154 minutes, hitting six fours and two sixes.
