Five Iranian women from villages around the city of Shiraz committed suicide by self-immolation last week as their families refused to let them work, the conservative daily Jomhoury-e-Eslami reported today.
The women were all aged between 14 and 23, and were suffering economic and cultural deprivation, an official was quoted as saying by the paper.
