Anil Kumble8217;s decision to quit brought back images of the leggie bowling with a bandage over his fractured jaw in West Indies that prompted cricket legend Viv Richards to say it was one of the bravest things he had seen on the field.

And cricket8217;s top run getter Sachin Tendulkar recalled the heroics of Indian cricket8217;s smiling assassin in Antigua in May 2002 when he bowled a stirring spell of 14 overs in which he got the prize wicket of Brian Lara.

8220;This is one match I can8217;t forget,8221; Tendulkar said to emphasise that Kumble had a 8220;big heart8221;.

Kumble, who had his bandage adjusted before bowling on quite a few occasions, had admitted he took a risk bowling with a broken jaw in the fourth Test against the Windies. But, he insisted that he was determined to do all he could do for his side before returning home for surgery on the injury.

The bespectacled mechanical engineer had drawn widespread praise for his resilience in returning to the field with his jaw bandaged up in the final session of the third day at St John8217;s in May 202.

8220;There was a bit of risk but I though the risk was worth it,8221; Kumble, then 31 said, adding 8220;at least I can now go home with the thought that I tried my best.8221;

The leggie was struck on the jaw by fast bowler Mervyn Dillon while batting and doctors confirmed a fracture.

8220;They temporarily tried to keep the jaw in position. The tooth was moving. There was a big crack,8221; he said of the efforts by the medical staff.

8220;Cricket has a way of producing inspiring tales of valour for ths country and this ranks at the top,8221; said batting great Sunil Gavaskar.
