Dosti, Junoon Style
The Sayonee boys are back with some more sufi-rock for our bhangra-drenched souls. This time, it8217;s a collection of songs from their early years, appropriately titled Dosti, for their years of friendship. Released in India by Virgin Records, the album has ten tracks, all stamped with their trademark jangly rock.
The album might be a good bet if you8217;re extending a friendly hand to someone, or if you adore the Paki-American boys.
Looney Tunes
Cartoons never were the preorgative of neo-natals, but Cartoons, the Elvis-crazy Danish band8217;s debut album, Toonage is a tribute to all the happiness, cheer and colour that a Donald Duck or a Popeye bring. Replete with boom! screech! and slam! sounds, Toonage has eleven songs with high-energy, beats that pulsate crazily and nonsensical lyrics.
Their Doo Dah video, which is currently being aired on music television, seems to be doing well with our teeny-bopper set here. Cartoons has six members, and you8217;ve got to hear their names to be sure we8217;re really talking toons 8212; Toonie, Sponge and Shooter are the three main musicians, and Buzz, Puddy and Boop joined in later.Their gear is totally Elvis, though their music, which takes off on the 1950s style, doesn8217;t really go with the Elvis image.
Brought to India by Milestone Entertainment, you can pick up a CD Rs 525 or a tape Rs 100. But pick it up only if you want to add to your party music collection, otherwise Toonage might drive you a bit crazy with their super-techno base. And you know how goggle-eyed you can get after a day of TNT.
Phulkari Magic
Remember the intricate cutwork saris grandma used to wear? Well, cutwork is back8230;. with some interesting new colour twists and designs. A collection and cutwork saris has gone on display at Phulkari in Sector -17. But cutwork is not the only thing that catches the eye. A never-before-heard-of marriage of baluchari wearing technique with light-as-air chanderi fabric is another recent entrant to the summer wardrobe. Valkalams, the saris that bear the name of the famous Varanasi weaver, Valkala, form a third enticement in the collection.
For the more conventional, Phulkari has stocked jamadanis, tanchois and plenty of jewel-toned Kanjeevarams and Mysore crepes. Worth a look-see certainly.
