World Bank bars L038;T for six months over forgery by executive

World Bank has barred Larsen amp; Toubro Lamp;T from doing any business with it or the projects funded by it for 6 months,after finding that a senior executive of the company indulged in a fraud.

The sanction order,dated March 7,said that Lamp;T8217;s ineligibility would continue across the entire World Bank group and has been imposed on Lamp;T 8220;for fraudulent practices8221; as per the bank8217;s Procurement Guidelines against Fraud and Corruption.

During the debarment period,Lamp;T as well as any of the entities controlled directly or indirectly by it can8217;t be nominated even subcontractor,consultant,manufacturer,supplier or even service provider to an otherwise eligible firm being awarded a World Bank-financed project.

The matter pertains to a bid submitted by Lamp;T through Regional Business Head of its Medical Equipment and Systems unit to a World Bank-financed project in Tamil Nadu.

The World Bank8217;s Integrity Vice Presidency alleged that Lamp;T 8220;engaged in fraudulent practices by submitting forged performance certificates with its bid8221;.

When contacted,an Lamp;T Group spokesperson said,We do not expect that these sanctions will have any significant impact on our business. On discovery of the misrepresentation,the employee was confronted with the fact and he resigned from the company. Lamp;T has since divested the medical equipment business.8221;

He added,8221;Based on the incident,preventive measures were tightened across the Lamp;T Group to prevent recurrence of such incidents.
