Artist Pooja Iranna on how Richard Serras torqued spiral inspired her.

The work that left an impression on me and shaped my creative thinking was American sculptor Richard Serras Torqued Spiral. A spiral made of enormous steel sheets,it was made in 2003-4. It was part of a retrospective, celebrating 40 years of Serras sculptures,at the Museum of Modern Art,New York,in 2007. Serra is one of the pre-eminent artists of our era, admired for his powerful use of material and larger-than-life works. He has remained true to his abstract and minimal way of expression. Yet,his sculptures cannot be put aside once seen and experienced. Torqued Spiral left a mark on me not only because of its size and texture, but also because of the artists commitment towards his work. That simple spiral structure charged me like nothing else.
