Kolkata: Man found hanging at home, FIR against wife, brother-in-law
Investigations revealed ongoing domestic disputes between Sunny and his wife Punita, who had lodged a complaint against him at Sarsuna police station in December 2025.
The police on Tuesday received a call at 6:55 am, and upon arrival, found Singh's body on the ground, with his wife claiming he had hanged himself.
A thirty-four year old man, Sunny Singh, was found dead in his house in Sarsuna, Kolkata on Tuesday morning, police said. According to police, Sunny, of Ekbalpore Lane, was found hanging from a ceiling fan at his home. His sister, Sangita Shaw (39), filed a complaint against Singh’s wife, Punita Singh (33), and wife’s brother, Rakesh Paswan, alleging murder and common intention.
The police on Tuesday received a call at 6:55 am, and upon arrival, found Singh’s body on the ground, with his wife claiming he had hanged himself. One of the neighbours, Kallol Hirak said that Punita informed him that her bedroom was locked from outside and she was trapped inside with her daughter and urged for help. He went ahead to help her following which Punita went to the balcony, adjacent to her room and from the balcony with the help of her neighbours she managed to come down.
“She opened the grill gate of the main entrance of her house with a key, in the presence of her neighbour and found that the wooden gate was kept ajar,” a police official said, adding, “During enquiry, it was learnt that the lock of the wooden gate was earlier broken by Sunny during a quarrel.”
According to a police official, on entering into the dining room with her neighbours, Punita found that her husband Sunny was hanging from the ceiling fan, with a ligature mark on his neck.
“No marks of external injury could be found except a non-continuous ligature mark around Sunny Singh’s neck. The body was sent to Vidyasagar State General Hospital, where he was declared brought dead at about 07.45 hrs by the hospital EMO,” police said.

On Monday night, a quarrel led to Punita and her daughter being driven out of the house by Sunny, but they returned with police intervention. Sunny was known to have a drinking problem, which often led to disputes with his wife, police said.

“During inquiry, it was learnt that there were domestic disputes going on between the deceased and his wife Punita and that they had started residing at the said address on rent since last six month,” a police official said.
The post-mortem examination at Kantapukur Police Morgue revealed Singh’s death was due to hanging. A case has been registered against Punita Singh and Rakesh Paswan under Sections 103(1) (murder) and 3(5) (common intention) at Sarsuna Police Station.
