The Major of an Army aviation unit in Bathinda who is facing a court of inqiry for allegedly posting explicit content and phone number of a superior officers wife on the Internet has now been referred for psychiatric assessment.
Highly placed sources in Headquarters,10 Corps in Bathinda, have revealed that the Major was first referred to the Military Hospital in Bathinda itself, from where he was referred to the Military Hospital in Jalandhar where he is currently undergoing psychiatric assessment.
It is not immediately clear why it was decided to refer him for such psychiatric evaluation. With this development, the ongoing court of inquiry has come to a halt and shall not proceed till the officers psychiatric evaluation is completed and the report is received by the headquarters. With Army Rule 180 having been imposed on the Major as well as the Lieutenant Colonel, who had accused him of the wrongdoing, the inquiry cannot proceed further until the Major is physically present in front of the inquiry.
Military Law experts say Army Rule 180 is imposed in an inquiry when the character and reputation of an officer is at stake. This provides the officer an opportunity to cross-examine the witnesses deposing before the court of inquiry.
Further developments in the court of inquiry shall also depend upon the result of the psychiatric evaluation of the Major. If he is found fit,the inquiry will be able to proceed in a normal manner but in case something is found amiss during the psychiatric evaluation, the Army authorities will have to take a call on how to proceed in the matter.
