The four high-profile seats in Punjab which went to the polls on Thursday recorded a healthy 65 per cent voting,up by two per cent compared to the last Lok Sabha polls. However, the state witnessed sporadic incidents of violence.

Bathinda, where Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badals daughter-in-law Harsimrat Badal and former chief minister Capt Amarinder Singhs son Raninder Singh are locked in a battle for political supremacy, saw over 67 per cent voting. Barring Sangrur, where the polling percentage saw a marginal decline, all the other three constituencies witnessed a surge in the turnout of voters. Ferozpur topped the chart with a high over 70 per cent polling. Followers of the Dera Sacha Sauda sect, which could play a decisive role in the outcome of the elections, came out in full strength to cast their vote.

The healthy voter turnout has only made the Congress happy. Capt Amarinder Singh said,The high turnout only tends to make our position stronger. Well begun is half done.

But Badal said the trends have sounded a death-knell for Capt Amarinder Singhs political career in Punjab. He said,It is the end of all Congress hopes in the state. Those within the Congress are already celebrating his political demise. He is losing both Bathinda and Patiala and is set to take a flight abroad. It seems the Akalis have lost their will to fight. Ive never seen such an extrovert manifestation of feeling in our favour in the last 40-years of my political career, Amarinder retorted.

Meanwhile, stray incidents of violence left one dead and several injured across the four seats. At least three incidents of firing and a few clashes between the Akali and Congress supporters were reported.
