Valley on agenda as Advani meets PM

BJP made it clear that the party was opposed to autonomy,self-rule or dilution of Centres authority.

At a time when the Centre is mulling political steps that need to be taken to calm tempers in the Kashmir valley,the BJP top-brass led by L K Advani on Monday met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and cautioned him against taking any steps which would reverse the process of the states full integration with India.

The BJP leaders made it clear that the party was opposed to proposals like autonomy,self-rule or dilution of Centres authority. The BJP also voiced its opposition to dilution or withdrawal of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act in certain districts,pointing out that such a move would affect the morale of the security forces.

Trying hard to revive its demand to scrap Article 370,the BJP leaders conveyed to the PM that the government must introspect whether the policy over the last 63 years has caused the demand to change from separate status to separatism.

Wary of the governments moves,the BJP has already decided to oppose any plans to grant more concessions to separatist elements. Advani said the BJP was not against granting more powers to states,but said that in the process,the full integration of the state with India should not be stopped. We have told the PM that the Centre should take no steps which would embolden the azadi-seeking separatists and weaken the government. New Delhi has never shown weakness in the last 63 years, Advani said after the meeting.

The meeting was also attended by Sushma Swaraj,Arun Jaitley and S S Ahluwalia. Home Minister P Chidambaram was also present. The BJP leaders handed over a detailed note to the PM which said while the situation in Kashmir was 8220;slipping out of control8221;,the government appeared to have 8220;no clear action plan to deal with it.8221;
