UP division: Cong treads cautiously

The party favoured examining such demands through a State Reorganisation Commission.

A day after Rajya Sabha MP Amar Singh told Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati to pass a resolution for the creation of a separate state of Poorvanchal to be carved out of eastern UP in the forthcoming session of the Assembly, the Congress on Wednesday decided to tread cautiously on the issue in the backdrop of the ongoing agitation for Telangana statehood. The party favoured examining such demands through a State Reorganisation Commission.

We will fulfil what we have said in our manifesto. We want a State Reorganisation Commission to be set up as the issue is not limited to Uttar Pradesh. Congress does not decide keeping in mind a region or the state but the whole country, party spokesperson Rashid Alvi told reporters in the Capital.

He,however, steered cleared of the issue of Telangana, saying the Congress general secretary in-charge of Andhra Pradesh was seized of the matter.
