The government has appointed S K Tripathi as the new head of the Research and Analysis Wing RAW after incumbent K C Verma put in his papers a month before he was scheduled to retire.
As reported by The Indian Express,Verma had earlier conveyed to the Prime Minister that he wanted to retire early so that Tripathi, head of the Aviation Research Centre,RAWs air wing, could be considered for the top post.
Tripathi will now take over at the end of this month and will have a fixed term of two years. As reported, the succession drama at the agency took a dramatic twist after Verma conveyed that he wanted to step down. Verma,it is learnt, recommended Tripathis name, citing organisational interests.
An old hand in RAW,Tripathi has served in various capacities in the agency and was also in the running for the top position in 2009.
However,in the aftermath of 26/11,the government put aside the panel which also included another senior officer,P V Kumar and brought in the outsider Verma, then Secretary Security in the Home Ministry.
