Towards a power-less India?

The government is expected to miss its power generation targets.

Country is unlikely to meet the 78,700 MW target set for the current five-year plan ending March 2012,despite Government’s ‘best efforts’ to meet the level,a Senior Union Minister said today.

“Around 61,000 MW of power will be generated by the end of the plan period…on best of our efforts,we might achieve upto 65,000 MW by 2012,” Union Power Minister,Sushil Kumar Shinde told reporters on the sidelines of an industry conference here.

During the first three years of the fiver-year plan, the country added 21,000 MW of additional capacity and is expected to add a total of 40,000 MW capacity over the next two years,Shinde said.

“We are adding 20,000 MW this year and another 20,000 MW next year,” Shinde said.

“We will likely meet just over three-fourth of our electricity capacity addition target during the current plan.

The target which was given to us initially was very big,but we accepted it,” Shinde said.
