TMC understands why Somnath, puzzled over PM

As the Trinamool Congress pulled the rug from under the Congress over the matter of presidential elections, the partys leaders in West Bengal said Mamata Banerjee

As the Trinamool Congress on Wednesday pulled the rug from under the Congress over the matter of presidential elections, the partys leaders in West Bengal said Mamata Banerjee would have never supported Pranab Mukherjee as the Finance Minister had failed to grant a moratorium of at least three years to the state on its loans.

Trinamool leaders also said that the naming of former speaker Somnath Chatterjee as one of her choices was a clever ploy on Mamatas part to dispel the charge of the state Congress that she was opposing Mukherjee as she didnt want the rise of any other prominent leader from Bengal stealing her thunder.

If she accepts Pranabs candidature,it will mean that Mamata has backed out of her demands on Bengals debt. In the present situation, she will not give up the fight. Because she has to run the government and running government under such a liquidity crisis is impossible, a Trinamool state minister said.

Nominating Somnath,on the other hand, was a win-win move as he is a respected and popular face in national politics. Not only that,Somnath is a Bengali, and has opposed the CPM for which he was expelled from the party, the minister added, explaining Mamatas position.

However,on one thing even the Trinamool leaders are puzzled: why did Mamata put PM Manmohan Singh in the race? There may be some equations playing in her mind, the minister said.
