Just as he is to be anointed the future king, ahead of his resentful brother Loki,Thor is cast out of Asgard,by his father Odin,as punishment for recklessly disobeying an order. Thor is sent to live amongst humans on Earth, where he encounters a team of scientists — Jane Foster,Professor Andrews and Darcy. But SHIELD Agent Phil Coulson is soon on the scene to arrest Thor and confiscate Jane’s hard won research. The hammer of thunder which had been sent to earth with Thor is now useless, until ‘a warrior worthy of it’ takes possession of it.

Kenneth Branagh directs this fantasy with a theatrical touch; with grandeur he mixes bursts of humour. The scale of the stunts is huge and offers a visually enticing time with 3D,visual effects and production design.

More dependent on action and effects, the film offers minimal scope for performances. Anthony Hopkins in a cameo is wasted; so are Natalie Portman and Stellan Skarsgard. Tom Hiddleston as Lauki grabs attention.

Thor suffices for an evening out. Absent is the thunder associated with Thor.
