Farther from BJP than ever
The distance between former chief minister Kalyan Singh and the BJP looks beyond bridging. He was all aggression recently when he termed his former party a dead snake. Kalyan, who has formed the Jan Kranti Party, now claims he is reluctant to return to the BJP despite having been approached by senior leaders. Insiders in the BJP said senior leaders in New Delhi favour his return but most of those in UP would rather not have him. Except state president Surya Pratap Shahi, most BJP leaders in UP are against Kalyans return because of his attitude problem, a senior leader said. All leaders agree, however, that Kalyan can potentially cause more damage to the partys prospects from outside than he can benefit it from inside.
Mayawati wields the axe
Chief Minister Mayawati has been suspending leader after leader. MLAs Farid Mahfooz Quidwai,Sher Bahadur Singh,Krishna Kumar and Bhagwan Sharma had defected to the Samajwadi Party. Also suspended were Awadh Pal Singh Yadav,Yogendra Sagar,Dashrath Prasad Chauhan and Haji Yaqub. Mayawati also expelled MLA Ashok Chandel shortly after he had been roped in from the SP,and suspended MP Dhananjay Singh for visiting Amar Singh at AIIMS. The BSP has cited disciplinary grounds in most cases.
Ajit stuck in seats deal
RLD president Ajit Singh is struggling to give final shape to his possible alliance with the Congress for the 2012 polls. Smaller parties, with whose help he has formed the Lok Kranti Morcha, are demanding their pound of flesh. Having tied up with Dr Ayubs Peace Party of India,Ajit is under pressure to fetch it some seats in eastern UP,insiders say. But the Congress, they say,is reluctant to give up these seats.
