The low voter turnout in Amethi a little over 45 per cent may have dashed sitting MP Rahul Gandhis hopes of winning by a record margin. In all five of his public meetings during Rahul8217;s day-long whirlwind tour of the constituency, all speakers, especially Capt. Satish Sharma, exhorted people to turn up at the polling booths in large numbers. Their common refrain was that victory was a foregone conclusion, and therefore they should try to put Rahuls name in the Guinness Book of World Records for winning by the highest margin. Party insiders, however, confided that there was apprehension that the BSP,which had secured over a lakh votes in the last elections and which had committed voters in rural areas, would look to narrow the margin and then claim that as an achievement.
