Hundreds of aspiring teachers clashed with police outside Chief Minister Lal Thanhawla Sailos official residence Thursday morning as they tried to stop the CMs convoy from leaving the compound, protesting against the sudden cancellation of a test to fill vacant posts in primary schools across the state. Two youth, including a woman, were injured in the clash.
The 300-odd protesting youth were angry about the education departments announcement Wednesday evening cancelling the test scheduled for Thursday.
We have come from far off towns and villages, and most of us had just reached Aizawl Wednesday evening when we learned through television news that the government has indefinitely postponed the tests. We wanted to meet the Chief Minister about it after failing to get a reply from the education minister, but he did not grant us an audience, said C Vanlalruata, who came from the southern town of Lunglei.
The youth under the banner of Pre-service Teachers Association later told a press conference they were shocked that the government cancelled the tests, apparently under pressure from the powerful Mizo Students Union.
P Lalchhuanga, director of school education, said,The government has decided to indefinitely postpone the tests because it was felt further discussions were needed.
