The first round of talks between the Rajasthan government and Gurjjar leaders to break the impasse on Sunday remained unsuccessful with Gurjjar spearhead Col Kirori Singh Bainsla stating they would accept only a permanent solution. Even as Rajasthan Power Minister and Gurjjar leader Jitendra Singh met Gurjjar leaders on the railway tracks in Bayana in Bharatpur,Bainsla threatened to intensify the stir in seven days if their demands for reservation were not met.
Acceeding to the Gurjjar demands that talks to break the deadlock were possible only in Bayana, the Power Minister met Bainsla maintaining that the government was doing its best to serve the Gurjjar interest. The government is committed to granting reservation to the Gurjjars and three other communities but the High Court has set certain rules in place, Singh said. He added that the High Court on December 22 had stated that quantifiable data was required before reservation could be granted and had given the government one years time to complete a survey of nomadic and backward tribes.
According to Singh, the government would finish the survey in a matter of months but Bainsla remained unmoved and even refused a place on a government appointed committee to address the issue. It is the governments responsibility to ensure reservation for us and we will not initiate any talks with the government unless five per cent reservation is the main agenda,Bainsla insisted. He added that the government had seven days to respond to their demands failing which the agitation would intensity.
Meanwhile,on day seven of their stir,Gurjjars attempted to block more rail and road routes in the state. Protesters tried to block narrow gauge rail lines in Bari area but the security forces thwarted them and controlled the situation, Circle Officer Bari,Manvendra Singh said.
They also tried to block Basedi road but could not do so due to the presence of the Rapid Action Force, he said.
There is no movement of trains on Jaipur-Delhi,Delhi-Mumbai,Jaipur-Kota and Ajmer-Indore tracks in Dausa,Bharatpur,Bhilwara and Tonk districts, respectively,as the Gurjjars continued to occupy the tracks. with PTI
