As the theatre fills with the poignant notes from a piano,the dancers enter wearing flowing costumes and corsets,taking the audience back to the Victorian era. The dancers pace haplessly on the stage as the performance reaches a crescendo,their every movement suggestive of ache and longing. The lights dim,the tempo of rhythm increases and the hero enters,covered in loose ropes that look like shackles. This acclaimed dance-drama piece titled Luxuria,presented by the Scottish Dance Theatre SDT,will be staged in India later this month.
Ranked as one of Europes leading modern dance groups,SDT formerly known as Dundee Rep Theatre is a Scotland-based group that collaborates with international choreographers to create contemporary dance theatre pieces. Slated to tour India from October 18 to November 4,the group will perform two other famous works apart from Luxuria. Among these is Dog by Hofesh Shechter known for his choreographed introduction to the TV series Skins and Drift by James Wilton.
Drift is a powerful duet that explores loneliness and closeness,commitment and trust. Sometimes the people we care about the most are the ones that we hurt the most is the message of this work. Dog comes with impressive credentials. It was labelled funny and outrageously ambitious and crammed with ideas and wit8230; and dance for the mind as well as the senses by the newspaper,The Guardian.
SDT will also be conducting a skills-sharing session with Aditi Mangaldas Dance Company in Delhi along with other interactive activities in Chennai,Bengaluru and Kolkata.
