Sopore: Valley shuts down

The call was given by Hurriyat hardliner Syed Ali Shah Geelani.

In view of the recent custodial killing of 25-year-old Nazim Rashid Shalla from Sopore,Kashmir on Wednesday observed a complete shutdown. The call was given by Hurriyat hardliner Syed Ali Shah Geelani.

All shops,business establishments,schools and colleges in Srinagar remained closed and public transport was off the roads. Government and semi-government offices saw low attendance.

In some parts of Srinagar,protesters clashed with the police as they were stopped from marching. Protesters took to the streets at Maisuma,Gowkadal,Nowhatta and Kawdara areas,raising pro-freedom and anti-India slogans.

The state government deployed heavy contingents of police and Central Reserve Police Force in Sopore to prevent protests.

Hurriyat hardliners called for peaceful protests on Friday against the custodial death,alleged rape and molestations in Kulgam and Pattan and the continuous arrest of separatist leaders.
