The article “Cakes and Ale”, (IE,January 20),illustrates what happens when people hold irrational grudges against prominent personalities of other countries. It takes as a given that allegations made by a European photographer about a purported incident involving an African personality must be true. Tickets for travel and funds accommodated for an African personality,he further claims, cannot be realised from private sources, but must surely have been “looted” from the treasury. The writer states as truth the blatant lie that the president of the country in question — Zimbabwe — misappropriates assets for personal use,a charge that his accusers have repeatedly found inconveniently baseless after deploying their best efforts to validate. A simple survey reveals the irrationality of this specious piece; prominent non-government personalities from Zimbabwe travel abroad everyday for various reasons, and some of them stay in foreign countries for months at a stretch. For his own reasons, the writer of the biased article is not interested in these others. If it is necessary to first “loot” the national treasury before a prominent personality can travel, the writer’s logic breaks down at this point and the sinister motive behind his article becomes obvious.

A lesson to others

This refers to ‘S-I dismissed for…’ (IE,February 3). It is a both shameful and pitiful that a child has been abused let alone in a state, which is ruled by Mayawati. We should not be open to such treatment nor should we allow it. The Chief Minister’s dismissal of S-I Shyamlal Yadav and inspector Chandrapal Singh is not enough. They both deserve exemplary punishment in order to stop this type of crime in the future.

Preventing collapse

The tendency of the CEC and other constitutional and statutory institutions such as the CAG,CVC and CBI to push their views via the platform of outlandish headlines is highly deplorable and needs to stop. The credibility and conduct of these bodies must be maintained at any cost lest our system collapse. The need of the hour is to evolve adequate mechanisms so that the stature of these elite authorities and the persons manning them can be preserved.

Their joy

It is natural to rejoice when something is achieved. When it is by an Indian,we tend to get lost in pride instead of enjoying the moment. It is definitely a greater moment for the individual than the nation. We need to learn how to enjoy a moment without forgetting the real winners. These are A.R. Rahman,Sania Mirza,Mahesh Bhupati’s moments.
