Senior scribe held for rape

Senior journalist S N M Abdi,who was one of the first to bring to light the Bhagalpur blindings of 1980,was on Friday arrested on rape charges.

Abdi,who is in his fifties,was alleged to have raped a 29-year-old woman when she went to his flat at New Alipore area in South Kolkata on Thursday. The woman has alleged in a complaint to the police that she was raped by two persons,Abdi and Saiful Alam. Alam is absconding.

On the basis of her complaint,the police arrested Abdi and produced him at Alipore court on Friday. Abdi was remanded to police custody till September 17.

According to police sources,the victim,a resident of Bhawanipore,was in dire need of a job. Mahesh Agarwal,a flower-boutique owner,introduced her to Saiful Alam who then introduced her to Abdi.

The woman went to Abdis apartment on September 9 where Alam was also present. Alam introduced himself as an employee of the Railways and she was told that Abdi works for the Metro Rail.

On September 10,she was told that she had got a job and Alam asked her to come to Abdis apartment,said Jawed Shamim,Joint Commissioner,Kolkata Police. According to sources,Alam took her to Abdis apartment at around 8 pm and said that he was unwell. Abdi left to get medicine for Alam.

The woman,in her complaint,has stated that after Abdi left,she was allegedly raped by Alam and then Alam went out and Abdi returned and allegedly raped her. He warned her not to speak about the incident.

The woman was dropped at her residence by Abdi. Police said the woman returned to her house at around 1.30 am and lodged a complaint with the New Alipore police station.

Abdis counsel Tamal Mukherjee said the womans allegation was false and made with an ulterior motive. Stating that Abdi had a bypass surgery five months back,Mukherjee said it was not possible for him to commit such an act and that he was a man of impeccable character.
