SC orders CBI probe against Andhra DGP

It asked the CBI Director to start investigating him and his wife and submit a status report in the court within four months.

In a setback to Andhra Pradesh Police chief V Dinesh Reddy, the Supreme Court Friday directed initiation of a CBI probe against him and his wife for allegedly accumulating ill-gotten wealth.

A Bench led by Justice B S Chauhan indicted the state government and its chief secretary for turning a blind eye to the accusations and need of a probe against Reddy even after the central government forwarded a copy of a complaint against him and asked for an inquiry.

The court also noted that the chief secretary filed a defective reply although the Bench asked him to file his personal affidavit as to whether any attempt had ever been made to find out the truth in the said allegations.

Our conscience was shocked as to the manner the state of Andhra Pradesh has misdirected itself and abandoned the most relevant issue, that is,complaint against Shri V Dinesh Reddy, said the Bench.

It asked the CBI Director to start investigating him and his wife and submit a status report in the court within four months.

The order was passed on an appeal by Umesh Kumar, another IPS officer who had filed the complaint against the DGP by allegedly forging the signature of MP M A Khan.

The Bench said probe was needed even though the complaint eventually turned out to be forged since there was substance in its content.
