Satisfied with verdict,say kin

The parents of Vadodara girl Tosha Thakkar, who was raped and murdered in Sydney in March 2011,said they were satisfied with the 45-year jail term given to 21-year-old Daniel Stani-Reginald by the Sydney Supreme Court on Friday.

The parents of Vadodara girl Tosha Thakkar, who was raped and murdered in Sydney in March 2011,said they were satisfied with the 45-year jail term given to 21-year-old Daniel Stani-Reginald by the Sydney Supreme Court on Friday. They, however, added they would have been happier had the court sentenced him to life imprisonment.

Our family is satisfied with the sentence as we feared the court might not give him more than 20-25 years sentence because he was a teenager and was believed to be mentally ill. Prosecutors had sought he be given life imprisonment as the murderer showed no remorse for his act and could have committed the crime again once he was out of jail, Toshas mother,Varsha Thakkar, said.

The judge at the Sydney Supreme Court sentenced Stani-Reginald to 45 years of imprisonment, with no parole for a minimum 30 years.

We would have been really satisfied had the court sentenced him to life imprisonment. Prosecutors have said they will try to ensure that he does not come out on bail even once during his 45-year sentence, Sunil Thakkar,Toshas father, said. Our relatives in Sydney called up at 9 in the morning to inform us about the verdict. They were at the court when the judge delivered the sentence, Thakkar said.

Stani-Reginalds lawyer had tried to defend him on the ground that he was mentally ill. While his lawyer tried to seek no more than 20-25 years jail term for him,the lawyer representing Toshas family sought enhanced sentence on the ground that the murderer was preparing to become a serial killer. Police found that during the course of investigation, the murderer accessed over 9,000 websites for tips to become a serial killer.
