With only four days left for a solution to intercept BlackBerry services,Canadas Research In Motion RIM on Friday submitted yet another detailed proposal to the home ministry on lawful interception of BlackBerry Enterprise Services. Meanwhile, operators have started informing their BlackBerry customers about the possibility of BlackBerry Enterprise and BlackBerry Messenger services being blocked from August 31.
Fridays BlackBerry solution from RIM comes after an earlier solution submitted on August 17 did not impress security agencies after a technical evaluation. Sources said the latest solution provided by RIM will be examined over the weekend by the security agencies and a final decision taken by the government early next week.
Sources said RIM has provided an interim solution and a final solution. If the final solution finds favour with the government,RIM would get an extension beyond August 31,during which an interim solution would be put in place.
Meanwhile, two professors from the Indian Institute of Technology,Kharagpur submitted a paper to the home ministry on Friday outlining how they can break RIMs encryption. Security agencies are studying this as well.
However, the government is satisfied with the solution RIM has provided with regard to BlackBerry Messenger services, which it would put in place from September 1 and completed by the end of the year. However,it is still to be examined if the two services can be segregated.
Acting on the home ministrys August 12 ultimatum to RIM,the DoT has already asked all operators providing BlackBerry services to halt services like the Messenger and Enterprises from September 1 if it is not possible to lawfully intercept these services.
