Reviving Tradition

When he was Chief Justice of India,S H Kapadia showed no interest in holding a meeting of chief justices and chief ministers

When he was Chief Justice of India,S H Kapadia showed no interest in holding a meeting of chief justices and chief ministers supposed to be an annual feature. Due to this reason, the important conference has not been held since 2010. However, present CJI Altamas Kabir is keen that the practice be revived and has directed that the conference be organised as soon as possible, certainly before he retires in July.

Worth a Watch

THE shortlist for the next Director for IIM Ahmedabad is rather interesting. The IIM-A Board has forwarded a panel of three names to the HRD Ministry. These include IIM-A alumni and Harvard professor Ashish Nanda, besides IIM-As own Prof Rakesh Basant and Prof G Raghuram. The choice of Basant has caught the attention of many. Basant was a member of the Sachar committee and had protested the Narendra Modi governments failure to contain the 2002 Gujarat riots. With the ball in the HRD Ministrys court,it will be worth watching who will get to head IIM-Ahmedabad.

General Interest

AT a time when Bangladesh is going through a troubled and violent phase,a high level visit to India by the Army Chief of the neighbouring nation has generated interest here. Gen Iqbal Karim Bhuiyan, who took over in June last year, will be visiting India for four days, starting April 1. The visit will reciprocate the trip of Indian Army Chief Gen Bikram Singh. Hectic preparations are on to welcome the General and a visit to operational areas is also on the cards.

Language Rules

THE selection of MPs to accompany President Pranab Mukherjees ongoing trip to Mauritius seem to have been dictated by their proficiency in Hindi. Congress Rajya Sabha MP Satyavrat Chaturvedi,BJP Rajya Sabha MP Kusum Rai and RJD Lok Sabha MP Raghuvansh Prasad Singh have one thing in common their adeptness in Hindi. Mauritius has a large Hindi-speaking population, but it also has a significant Telugu diaspora, and there is no MP in the Presidents delegation to cater to that constituency.

Copping Out

WITH Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit expressing helplessness yet again, pointing out that the DG and IG of Tihar Jail reported to the Home Ministry, and therefore her government could not be held responsible for the suicide of gangrape accused Ram Singh,Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde threw a challenge to her. He said Dikshit had raised the issue of Delhi Police being under the Home Ministry on a lot of occasions and it was nothing new this time. Let her write to me asking that Delhi Police be transferred to Delhi government8230;. I will not disappoint her, Shinde said in response to a query. He did not forget to add, slightly sarcastically it seemed, that Dikshit was a senior leader who was running her government well.
