The Gujarat Police is in a tizzy after Rajkot Congress MP Kunvarji Bavalia received an extortion call demanding Rs 7 lakh within 24 hours.

The Gujarat Police is in a tizzy after Rajkot Congress MP Kunvarji Bavalia received an extortion call demanding Rs 7 lakh within 24 hours. The anonymous caller threatened to kill Bavalias family members and blow up his school at Amarapur in Rajkot district,if he failed to cough up the money within the deadline.

IG Rajkot Manoj Sashidharan has deployed a heavy police cover at Bavalias residence here,as well as at his school. The case is developing. We are close to nabbing the caller, Sashidharan said.

Bavalia received the first call around 9 pm on Monday, when he was on board the Shatabdi Express on his way to New Delhi. He got another call when the train reached Abu Road.

Before Bavalia could say anything, the MP was asked to give Rs 2 lakh by the next morning and another Rs 5 lakh within 24 hours. The MP told the police that the caller merely kept repeating the demand and did not disclose his identity. The MP soon got in touch with the Gujarat DGP and the Rajkot IG.

Bavalia,a former Jasdan MLA,was elected to the Parliament from Rajkot after defeating BJPs Kiran Bhalodia.
