Rain fells 2 buildings,many trapped

18 more bodies found,Sikkim toll rises to 93.

In more bad news for Sikkim,two multi-storey buildings collapsed at the Balwakhani area in Gangtok around 7 pm on Friday following heavy rain. While no casualties had been reported till night,a number of residents are feared trapped underneath.

Officials said another building adjacent to them was considered to be in a precarious condition and could collapse at any time.

Meanwhile,as many as 18 more bodies were found in North Sikkim,taking the toll in the quake-hit Himalayan state to 93. Rescue workers are finally inching their way to the devastated North district villages on foot,and the toll is expected to climb.

According to sources,while one of the Gangtok buildings that collapsed today belonged to a former minister of Sikim and housed several flats and a cinema hall,another building belonged to Karma Bhutia,an uncle of football player Bhaichung Bhutia. The building housed an office of Sikkim United football team.

With the buildings collapsing,the residents came out of their houses and set up tents on the road. The building was very old and damaged after the earthquake. Moreover,yesterday,a tremor was felt. All those buildings that developed cracks have now become dangerous, said K S Tobgay,state information secretary. The Army has been pressed into action and they are carrying out rescue operations.
