The trial of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa in a disproportionate assets DA case dating back to the 1991-96 period has suffered a setback with the special public prosecutor,B V Acharya, deciding to quit the case.
Former Karnataka advocate general and special public prosecutor Acharya, who eight months ago accused the BJP government in Karnataka of attempting to dislodge him from the trial, submitted his resignation to the state home secretary on Monday hinting at the prolonged delay in the trial, harassment in different forms and his advancing age as reasons for exiting the case.
I accepted this case hoping it will conclude within a year. Now it is seven years and it does not look like it will come to a close anytime soon, Acharya,78,said.
