Probe ordered into custodial death in J-K

The state government on Sunday ordered a magisterial inquiry into the death of an alleged thief in police custody after irate villagers refused to cremate the body and blocked the road leading to Nikki Tawi area on the outskirts of Jammu city.

Deputy Commissioner,Jammu,Sanjeev Verma,said Additional Deputy Commissioner Sheetal Nanda would conduct the inquiry.

Deceased Vinod Kumar,35,was a resident of Bajala village.

While the police claimed that the deceased was wanted in various cases of burglaries,his family members said he was a vegetable vendor. The deceased’s wife said some policemen in plain clothes had come to their residence on December 22 and asked her husband to accompany them.

The police,however,said they were looking for Vinod in a case of burglary since last year.

After apprehending him,the police party reportedly stopped at a dhaba where Vinod is said to have taken excess dose of some intoxicant.

However,villagers staged a sit-in on a bridge leading towards Nikki Tawi area and blocked the road,demanding an inquiry into the matter.
