Director Ankush Bhatt recounts the experience of shooting in the infamous Bhindi Bazar area where his film Bhindi Baazaar is set.

South Mumbais Bhindi Bazaar with its narrow lanes, petty criminals and dense population is where the realistic and gripping drama Bhindi Baazaar is set and shot. Debutant director Ankush Bhatt along with his crew and cast including Kay Kay Menon,Shilpa Shukla,Pawan Malhotra and others shot in the area for 22 days. Bhindi Bazar is a hard-core Muslim area and a little scary for outsiders as people are hostile to strangers. Also, the police hardly have any control over the crowds. There is a bhai in every lane, who control things and these very bhais who provided us with security during the entire shooting schedule, said Bhatt.

But what struck the director were the 100-year old buildings with their spectacular architecture and several masjids in every lane. The area has retained its old-world charm and was the perfect setting for my film, which revolves around the lives of pick- pockets. There are entire groups of pickpockets who live there and my research showed that they are about 150 ways of pickpocketing,of which 70 have been shown in the film, revealed Bhatt, adding how pickpocketing requires only one sharp blade, and the crime is committed without guns or drugs.

What stands out in the directors mind is how everyone got so engrossed in a scene one day that they didnt realise they were shooting in a lane for which they had not acquired permission. Since all the lanes look similar and difficult to distinguish we landed up shooting in the wrong lane and were put behind bars for the same. Thankfully, the cops were very understanding and let us off in a couple of hours, he laughed.
