How do you create a new world? While the god-like feeling is hard to shake off, there are many nitty-gritties that a new world requires to make it believable. In Capturing Avatar,a 100-minute behind-the-scenes footage from the movie8217;s just released Special Edition DVD,director James Cameron admits he did not think much about it all when he first conceptualised Avatar and its alternate world Pandora.
The movie8217;s making provides immense entertainment. It gives fans a glimpse into the making of Hollywood8217;s most successful movie of all time. While the movie looked like poetry in motion all through its 162-minute journey, the process behind its creation has been wrapped in mystery so far.
So,what elements does a new world need apart from intelligent life? A lot apparently. The entire atmosphere and elements need to be created to give this life a background to fall back upon. Next, you need a language for the Na8217;vis to communicate. An expert was called upon to create a separate language based on ancient languages across the world to create a list of words for the Navis. Cameron also says he wanted to retain a little of the wildness we find in nature. No wonder then that the Na8217;vis speak with a lot of hissing and braying sounds. The walk came next. A movement coach trained the lead and supporting actors into the correct way of graceful and animal-like walk. Cameron states that music was an important part of his Avatar experience and chose James Horner after much thought. Horner8217;s music, while not epoch-making,transcends from simple tunes to complex arrangements without jarring on the ears too much. It8217;s exactly what I was looking for, Cameron gushes.
The filmmaker even brings in a biologist to give the mammals in his world the right look and display the correct amount of natural photosynthesis. He also displays a peculiar sense of timing. I knew I could not directly get audiences into Pandora and expect them to fall in love with it. The process had to be gradual, he says. Therefore,Avatar starts with normal daylight shots of the army base on Pandora to keep the viewer on sure territory. Then it moves to the jungles of Pandora in daylight to give a sense of the scale of the planet where you delight at the director8217;s imagination. After a brief acclimatisation,Cameron hits you with the force of a sledgehammer knowing fully well that he has enticed you into his world.
Avatar, which showcases glowing plants,a huge tree of life, delicate flowers,dinosaur-like beasts and colourful flying banshees, were sources from rare rainforests across the world. The entire environment was created after visiting virgin forests in China and Venezuela where you can see how life was before we encroached upon it, Cameron says. The flora and fauna were given colours and tones after looking at dangerous creatures, since they are the most visually attractive.
The actors shot in a huge garage-like setup for over a year with Cameron using a simulcam. He explains its uses succinctly and shows how he shot with the camera that allowed him to see exactly how his shots will look after post-production. Producer Jon Landau tells audiences that it took a year to figure out just how to shoot Avatar and just about made the deadline given to 20th Century Fox. Cameron also took his lead crew to a Hawaiian forest so that they knew what they were getting into because the script could not explain Pandora too much and the actors had to keep their spirits up while knowing what to do on the set. The crew also moved to New Zealand to shoot the live action scenes.
The film closes with the shots of Cameron supporting various environment causes. As he says,I didn8217;t want to just make a film. It had to have something more.
