With the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly failing to discuss the custodial death of National Conference worker Syed Yousuf, the issue has spilled out to the streets. The Opposition PDP on Wednesday held a sit-in at Regal Chowk in Srinagar. The party reiterated its demand for the resignation of Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, who,it alleged, was leading a corrupt government. The PDP had disrupted the Assembly for two days, demanding a debate on the September 30 death of Yousuf in police custody but the Speaker did not allow it. On Wednesday,PDP workers, led by party chief Mehbooba Mufti, took to the streets. Carrying placards and banners, they started for Lal Chowk but were stopped some distance away. The protesters were demanding that the killers of Yousuf be identified and brought to justice, and shouting slogans against the government for shielding them. Mehbooba said Yousuf went inside the CMs residence in good health but was almost dead when he came out. It is not about Yousuf only but common Kashmiris as well, she said. She alleged Yousuf was killed because he gave proof of corruption to the Chief Minister. Mehbooba alleged that the probe ordered by the CM is just to hoodwink people. She also alleged that the government did not tolerate opposition. The hour-long sit-in protest dispersed peacefully.
