Pavit: Antony pulls up Navy,Coast Guard

Sources said the minister was not satisfied by an explanation given by the Navy on the incident and has asked all stakeholders to return for another meeting in a few weeks with firm measures to plug gaps in coastal security.

Unhappy with the explanation by the Navy on the MT Pavit incident in which the vessel which had been abandoned off Oman drifted onto a Mumbai beach without being detected,Defence Minister A K Antony pulled up the top brass at a meeting on coastal security on Wednesday.

Antony who chaired a high-level meeting that was attended by the Navy chief as well as the Coast Guard DG,asked the services to keep the faith of the nation intact and employ all available resources to ensure that this is not repeated.

Sources said the minister was not satisfied by an explanation given by the Navy on the incident and has asked all stakeholders to return for another meeting in a few weeks with firm measures to plug gaps in coastal security.

The Navy and Coast Guard had earlier come under heavy criticism when the 1000-ton merchant vessel that had been deemed lost in the Arabian sea landed at a Mumbai beach, beating the three-layer security ring, strengthened after the 2008 Mumbai attack.

The minister took stock of coastal security measures that had been approved after the attack, including the proposal to set up a coastal radar chain that has still not fructified. A release by the ministry said the project is now likely to start within a month. Necessary negotiations have been concluded and the project is likely to start in a months time and completed in one year, the release said.
