Patil notice puts off AMU Court meeting

President Pratibha Patil on Friday issued a show-cause notice to the administration of Aligarh Muslim University AMU with regard to its controversial Court meeting scheduled for December 19,putting the meet on hold. The President is Visitor to all Central universities, including AMU.

A number of MPs had recently complained to the President as well as to the HRD Minister on the issue seeking their intervention to get the AMU Court meeting put off.

The Visitors notice has been issued under Section 13 6 of the Aligarh Muslim University Act,1920 for holding the Courts meeting without fulfilling necessary conditions.

It has been brought to the notice of the Visitor by members of the Court of Aligarh Muslim University and other stakeholders that the meeting of the Court is scheduled to be held on 19th December,2010 with important agenda to elect Chancellor,Pro-Chancellor,Treasurer and 6 representatives to the Executive Council, without fulfilling the statutory requirement of the minimum notice period of 35 days, the show-cause notice reads.

Asking why the proceeding to convene the Court meeting should not be annulled, the show cause reads that the Visitor has further directed that until the universitys reply is received and decision of the Visitor communicated, the university will keep the decision to hold the Court meeting in abeyance.

Directing the university to inform all Court members about the notice, the Visitor has sought the varsitys response within 15 days.

On Thursday,AMU Teachers Association passed a resolution terming the meeting patently illegal as it is taking place without the requisite 35-day notice and without release of agenda papers on time. Also, there are about 45 vacancies in the AMU Court itself with 25 alumni members missing and 11 student nominees amongst other categories of people required to be represented.
