USAID chief visits relief camp run by JuD arm

Conflicting claims were made on Wednesday about the visit of USAID chief Rajiv Shah to a relief camp run by a front organisation of Jamat-ud-Dawa,in Sindh. JuD spokesman Yahya Mujahid said Shah had visited the camp run by Falah-e-Insaniyat Foundation at Sukkur in Sindh. He handed over two trucks of relief materials for distribution among the flood victims, Mujahid said. The US embassy spokesman Rick Snelsire denied that the camp visited by Shah was run by Falah-e-Insaniyat. Meanwhile,Shah said that Pakistan will have to demonstrate it can spend relief funds transparently and well if it wants more help in rebuilding after its massive floods,as the UN appealed for more helicopters to ferry aid to around 800,000 stranded people.

UN agency makes unusual aid appeal

A UNs International Telecommunication Union press release has asked donors to wire money to the National Bank of Pakistan or Switzerlands UBS AG to assist the flood-affected victims and rebuild telephone networks, but offers no specifics on concrete projects. ITU spokesman Sanjay Acharya said that the appeal was made upon request from Pakistans government. For the Pakistani account,he said, its their responsibility.
